Learn just the way of town distribution since Sasayama castle established.
Sasayama castle was built in 1609, at the time of the Edo period had started. Tokugawa who took power for the new period checked western lords reinstating Toyotomi clan's power by building Sasayama castle. It didn't have a keep tower from the beginning, instead it was built as fast as a half year. It was burned down by fire in 1944, however the main hall "oshoin" was rebuilt thanks to the effort of preservation activity. We are now able to see the stone wall standing as it was, and look around inside the rebuilt-oshoin.
Not only the castle itself, but also the town distribution surrounding it is appreciated as an element of Japan heritage. The castle town had developed right after the castle built, in 1610. There still remains samurai residence district on the west side of the castle, on the south-east side, merchant houses district appears. There elegantly stand many buildings since 120-180 years ago, with the enormous effort of that people in Sasayama had preserved and maintained the assets.
These districts include Sasayama castle, are designated Japan's an Important Preservation Districts for a Group of Traditional Buildings. You will learn the whole constitution of castle town of the Edo period, not only view townscapes.
In the castle town, you will find many museums of historical resources, artifacts, history of Sake, or Sasayama folk song "Dekansho", every in traditional buildings.
